What were the conditions like? Conditions were good but humid, temperatures reached upper 80’s in the afternoon and high 60’s low 70’s at the start.   We had a WSW wind and in the afternoon reached 10-12 MPH.   Experienced some difficult cross winds in the late afternoon, strong enough that a passing truck knocked off the amber lights from the follow vehicle.  Fortunately the lights were only scratched and battle beaten but still in good operation to continue the attempt. We left the hotel at 3:45a and started at approximately 4:00a to get a jump on Cincinnati commuter traffic and rode 3 hours in the dark hours of the morning.  Traffic was light through Cincinnati and Dayton area considering the time of day.   The first 50 miles were rolling hills and we climbed 2900 [...]

Only a mile or two into the attempt I had to pull over and stop in order to not impede traffic, but traffic thinned out the [...]

We also started a manual emergencystopwatch but we didn't need to use it.First of all, we wanted to share a sporting challenge between two brothers who werepassionate about sports and cycling.   Congratulations to Kevin Nickel for setting the Kansas N-S record (18-49 - Standard bike). Kevin covered the 229 miles in 10 hrs and 54 min for an average speed of 21.01 mph despite starting in sub freezing temps. Read Kevin's full account below the pictures Rider’s Narrative Summary I, Kevin Nickel, attempted the Kansas N-S WUCA record on December 14th, 2018. The ride began at the on US highway 83 at the Kansas/Nebraska border at 6:34am. The temperature was 19 degrees Fahrenheit with a a light 5mph NW tailwind as we headed off into the still dark morning. I was joined by my WUCA official, Russell Adrian (Newton, KS), and my two crew members Elton Nickel and Dawson Duerksen of Goessel, KS. The record attempt was undertaken as an event that we hoped would generate interest in a fundraiser for the church both my crew and I attend, Tabor Mennonite Church of rural Goessel, KS. A Gofundme page was set up with funds given directly to the nonprofit and media outlets, including both local and those areas we would pass through, were contacted. This specific record attempt across Kansas was chosen as it had been on my goals list [...]

Dr Mahendra Mahajan – India N-to-S November 15 – 2018

Congratulation to Dr Mahendra Mahajan and his Crew for setting a WUCA world record for India N-to-S. They started on Nov 5, 2018 at Kashmir and 10 days, 10 hours and 1 minute later then arrived at Kanyakumari. He covered the 2331 miles at an average speed of 9.32 mph. There were many exciting things along the way. Please read Dr Mahajan's  pictures he shared with us and his personal day by day account below them.   K2K was a CHALLENGE which tested my determination and all the experience I acquired not only in ENDURANCE but through lessons in LIFE... Why I say that... A brief write up on challenges and overcoming them. 1) Delayed start due to Snowfall in Kashmir Valley : We intended to start on 3rd morning, but mother nature has some other plans. It rained heavily on 2nd and 3rd and snowed on 4th (first time in 9 years in Nov.) This disrupted the road to Jammu with landslides. So had to start on 5th, although many suggested against it as the snow beside the road was still melting and roads were slippery. 2) 3°C at Start point : It was biting cold at the start point with 1°C [...]

Taylor Kitchens Alabama W-E Oct 27, 2018

Rider’s Narrative by Taylor Kitchens This record attempt was for Alabama W-E. It began at exactly 4:30am on 10-27-2018 I started at the Mississippi/Alabama line. It was 43 degrees at the start and got to a high of 60 degrees. I wanted to do a record for the challenge to see if it was possible. I rode a Specialized Tarmac and Geurciotti Time Trial Bike. Fueling was Endurox R4 and 4 fig Newtons The Best park was not worrying about anything but riding. My crew took care of everything. The hardest part was crashing on a bottle exchange doing 25 mph at mile 40. Interesting/unusual things during the attempt: I set PR on Century by doing 4:43 on the first 100 miles. Lost radio communication due to blown fuse at mile 80. The mind really tells you, “You can’t do this, your body is tired”. I kept telling it to “shut-up” not my legs which usually get that speech. I finished at the Al/Ga line in Pheonix City on the Bridge at 4:15pm ……………………………….. Ride report from Crew Chief Taylor Kitchens is no stranger to hard work but he was a stranger to competitive cycling until 3 years ago. He [...]

Bob Willix North Carolina W-E Record – 2018-10-10

Bob Willix NC Border-to-Border Record October 10-11, 2018 Rider’s Narrative Summary Record attempt: North Carolina Border-to-Border, West to East Name of rider: Bob Willix Start date and exact start time to the nearest minute: Wednesday morning, October 10, 2018 at 4:00 a.m. Exact start location described so that someone else could find the same spot: Murphy, NC Courthouse at 75 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC 28906 What were conditions like? Absolutely Epic!!! We started at 4 a.m. on Wednesday morning, and 30 minutes later it started raining because Hurricane Michael was approaching from the Gulf of Mexico. It basically never stopped raining for almost the entire record attempt! We had numerous challenges, from closed roads to incredibly high winds at the end when approaching the eye of the storm. Why did you want to do a record? I’ve known Terry Landsdell for many years and he holds the 49 and under record. I also had met Jim Casper several years ago, who has the current (until now) age group record. BOTH men are amazing individuals that were very gracious and kind in supporting me to break their records. As an endurance athlete, I’ve done many events, but I’d never ridden this [...]
